The combustion of solid biomass products can be used for space heating or can drive a turbine generator for electricity production. It is most commonly used directly as a combustible fuel. Biomass often provides the feedstock for biogas and liquid biofuels.

Examples of biomass include: wood chips and waste from paper production, grass clippings, animal waste, organic and agricultural waste.
