Ocean Energy
Wave and Tidal Power
Tidal power is a form of hydropower which converts the power of the tides into electricity. It is the only form of renewable energy which utilizes the power of the moon in its generation. The greater the difference in the tide levels, or the speed of the currents in a certain location, the greater potential for creating electricity.
Sustainable tidal power is generated when the natural flow of water is not disturbed. This includes floating turbines, which act much like wind turbines in the air, which have a much lower ecological impact than barrages. Barrages, which act as dams across bays or estuaries where tides cause a dramatic change in water level, cause many problems for fish and other wildlife. Thus, barrage hydropower is not deemed sustainable.
