Renewable energy leads to energy autonomy
Renewable energy leads to energy security in both supply and cost.
Supply: Today's energy system has evolved over the last 150 years, and many of these technologies and terms of thinking about energy date to early in this time period. Cities over this time have become reliant on distant and dirty energy sources. Being sourced so far away, people did not have the chance to conceptualize energy as something a part of their environment, and today, most people now take it for granted where their energy is coming from and from what sources.
Cost: Many renewable energy technologies utilize free fuel, such as wind, water, geothermal and solar energy. Therefore the costs of these renewable energy systems are largely upfront, and therefore stable. Conventional power supply's main costs are in the fuels, in sourcing, protecting, mining, processing, and delivery. The costs of conventional forms of energy supply are largely associated with fuel costs, which consist of a large portion of their price - in addition making them more expensive from a life-cycle perspective. Fuel prices are subject to fluctuation: making conventional sources risky from a cost perspective.
